yarns and roving |

I have been messing about with fiber of one sort or another since I was very little and that hasn’t changed as I have gotten older. There are more opportunities to try different fiber arts now—the difficulty is that there isn’t as much time to indulge now!
We used to have more sheep than the three who currently reside with us and more sheep means more fleeces. I have “several” boxes of fleece up in the barn waiting to be spun.
One way to diminish the supply and indulge my love of working with color has been to dye what I call “colortails”. These are one ounce lengths of roving that are dyed any color that suits my fancy on a given “dye day”. The fiber is wool from Lily and Button (white—Romney/Lincoln/Columbia X), Hunter (light gray heather-Icelandic/Shetland X), Wolfie and Davidson (darker grays and a little coarser– Lincoln/Suffolk X). Most of the “colortails” are dyed white wool which produce the clearest colors, but the colored heathers are a nice variation.
These “colortails” are rolled into balls and go with me to events and shows. They are a little light in weight for juggling, but they are great for beginning spinners who want to spin something other than white or gray natural fleece once they get the hang of spinning. The one ounce size works well for spinners who want a little color in a project but who do not dye themselves. They can purchase a small quantity of several colors for intarsia or Fair Isle knitting, felting, or to blend with other fibers.

Check out the calendar. Come visit at the events, or contact me if you like to “talk color and fiber”. |

Mostly I do these on my own because the day is just too beautiful not to have colorful wool hanging in the breeze on the back porch. Sometimes several friends come over and we have fun experimenting with color. |

I also dye larger amounts of fiber for special projects and blending and multicolor yarns. |
